The Sterilization Principle of Ultraviolet Germicidal Lamp

Many UV germicidal lamp suppliers produce useful germicidal lamp products. The lamps use suitable wavelengths of ultraviolet rays to destroy cells.

It destroys the molecular structure of the DNA or RNA in the cells of microorganisms. Hence, it will cause the death of growth and (or) regenerative cells.

Eventually, leading to the impaired metabolic function of the bacteria. Besides, it will also cause genetic problems with the bacteria.

The continuous ultraviolet radiation will eventually cause the death of the bacterial population. As a result, it will achieve the desired sterilization effect.

Ultraviolet light prevents the reproduction and regeneration of germs. It can also reduce the “activeness” of microorganisms.

Bacterias have a photo-recovery enzyme under visible light with a wavelength of 300-500nm. It can make the bacterial population active and reproduce in large numbers.

Using UVC irradiation can reduce the reproduction of bacteria. That is why a UV germicidal lamp by UV LED mamufacrturers is more effective than common alcohol disinfection.

Main Parameters And What They Mean

It is vital to buy from reliable UV germicidal lamp suppliers. You can choose UVC LED Light products from China’s UV light companies.

Learn the primary parameters and the meanings of a UV germicidal lamp before buying.

Note: Deep ultraviolet sterilizing LED light is unsuitable for large-scale air/object disinfection. So, the following is only for low-pressure mercury lamp light products.

1. Irradiation Intensity

It means the radiation intensity at a certain distance. Let’s discover the two situations to check this data:

Firstly, assume ultraviolet germicidal lamps have been used for some time. Here are the suggestions by the “Technical Standard for Disinfection 2022:”

For ordinary straight-tube 30W ultraviolet germicidal lamps:
– The radiation intensity of 253.7nm wavelength at 1m should be ≥ 70μW/cm².
– It should be replaced when the value is lower than 70μW/cm².

For other special-shaped or non-30W lamps:
– the radiation intensities should not be lower than the calibration value of the manual.

Secondly, assume the newly bought UV germicidal lamps have yet to be used several times. Here are the suggestions by the GB/T 19258-2012 “Ultraviolet germicidal lamps:– The initial irradiation intensity after stabilization of different powers (253.7nm wavelength to be tested, 1m test distance) is at least 93% of the value specified in the table below. The radiation intensity is gradually attenuated as the distance increases.

2. Power

The power is proportional to the radiation intensity. The higher the power, the higher the radiation intensity.

“Technical Specifications for Disinfection 2022” suggests the following:
The power distribution should not be lower than 1.5 W/m³. It is to achieve better results when disinfecting indoor spaces.
Let’s look at the example of a living room equipped with ultraviolet germicidal lamps. The power should be area (15 ㎡) × room height (3m) × 1.5W=67.5W.

A bathroom should have a UV germicidal lamp with the power below:
area (4.5 ㎡) × room height (2.5m) × 1.5W=17W.
Of course, the above power selection may differ due to budget and the actual situation. You should discuss with your far UVC LED light manufacturers before purchasing.

3. Killing Dose

You can calculate the dose with irradiation intensity (μW/cm²) × irradiation time (s). Each microorganism needs a particular amount of dose to be killed. You can’t just focus on irradiation intensity and ignore the irradiation time. Meanwhile, the higher the irradiation intensity, the shorter the irradiation time required.

The data on the killing dose for coronavirus is yet to be found. But we can refer to a previous article. It is about the sensitivity of the SARS virus under ultraviolet radiation. We can roughly conclude that the killing dose for the new coronavirus is 162000 μW·S/cm².

4. Lamp Tubes

Quartz lamp tubes and high borax glass tubes are mainly used by ultraviolet light manufacturers.

The transmittance of the quartz lamp tube reaches over 90% after igniting for 2000 hours. The ultraviolet intensity will decay to 70% to 80% of the initial value due to the aging of the lamp tube.

The ultraviolet transmittance of the high borax glass tube is less than 50%. After hundreds of hours of lighting, the UV intensity will drop to about 60% of the initial value.

Dust and dirt on the surface of the lamp tube will hinder the transmittance of ultraviolet light. So, you should wipe the lamp tube not in use with alcohol regularly to keep it clean.

5. Lifespan

The GB/T 19258-2012 “Ultraviolet Germicidal Lamp” defines the lifespan of a single lamp as “the time from the first use until it is burnt, or the cumulative time for the maintenance rate of ultraviolet radiation flux to drop to the standard value.”

Typically, the average lifespan of UV germicidal lamp is at least 5000h. The radiant flux maintenance rate of 2000h is at least 85% and is not less than 65% when it reaches the end of its lifespan. At this point, you must replace the lamp to maintain the bactericidal effect.

The following table is the minimum value of the initial UV radiation efficiency. The radiation efficiency at the initial startup will slowly activate to normal. It takes time for the mercury vapor in the lamp tube to be thoroughly stimulated.

There are no supporting facts yet to be found for detecting radiation flux. You can buy a radiometer to check whether the radiation intensity meets the standard. Then, determine whether it can function normally. But the price is slightly higher, and a radiometer is enough for two or three UV lamps.

Let’s suppose that the quality of the ultraviolet lamp is good. It has a lifespan of 2000h, and the duration of usage is 5.5h daily for a year. This lifespan should suffice.

Thus, choosing a well-known brand of UV lamp suppliers is better. Our UVC has qualified certification, strict quality control, and perfect after-sales service. Besides, you can use our UV lights for at least two years or at most 8000+ hours.

6. Ozone Output Rate

It means the ratio of the amount of ozone produced per unit of time to the power consumed by the lamp under specified conditions.

GB/T 19258-2012 “Ultraviolet Germicidal Lamps” stipulates the following:
– The initial ozone output rate of non-ozone lamps should be lower than 0.05 g/(kW h).
– The ozone-containing lamps should be at least 80% of the nominal value.

Meanwhile, the olfactory threshold of ozone is 0.04mg/m³. When the concentration reaches 0.22mg/m³, it will stimulate the mucous membrane. The concentration of 4.3mg/m³ will cause central nervous system disorders.

Assume using a 100W UV ozone-free lamp with a max limit of 0.05 g/(kW·h). It will produce 10mg of ozone when operating for 2 hours continuously. The concentration in the 66m³ areas (100W÷1.5W/m³≈66m³)  is about 0.15mg/m³. It can be smelled but will not cause damage to the body.

High ozone concentrations can harm the human body, especially the elderly and children. It can be highly related to the respiratory system and cardiovascular mortality.

So, assume using a UV lamp with an ozone function to sterilize. People must leave the venue and wait for at least 30 to 60 minutes. It is the ozone reduction time before entering the venue.

The “Safety and Sanitation Standard for Ozone Generator GB 28232-2011” states:
– The effective concentration of air disinfection in closed rooms should be ≥ 20mg/m³. The action time should be ≥ 30min;

– For ≥60mg/m³, the relative humidity should be 70%, and the action time is 60min~120min.

How to Choose Household Ultraviolet Disinfection Lamps

1. Wall-Mounted or Portable Types

The germicidal lamps sold by UV light companies include wall-mounted and portable types.

The wall-mounted type is fixed for placement. It is generally used in crowded places like factories, kindergartens, and canteens.

It is usually recommended to use a portable germicidal lamp for household use. You can even customize your lamps by discussing with UV lamp manufacturers.

2. With or Without Ozone Emission

With Ozone Emission (mainly ultraviolet rays with 185nm wavelength)

Advantages: Ultraviolet and ozone double the sterilization effect, leaving nothing behind. Ozone can sterilize deeply in most areas, not just the irradiated areas. It also has the effect of removing odor and formaldehyde.

Disadvantages: There will be a strong ozone smell during use. Ozone is harmful and requires a long ventilation time of more than 50 minutes. It is recommended to use it in places like:

– Large residences
– Areas with many piles of objects
– Areas with many dead ends
– Areas without long-term sunlight exposure
– Areas with good ventilation.

Without Ozone Emission (mainly ultraviolet rays with 253.7nm wavelength)

Advantages: It is equal to the effect of pure ultraviolet from sunlight in removing mites. You’ll only need to allow ventilation for about 20 minutes before entering the room. There is almost no residue after disinfection.

Disadvantages: There can be dead ends when disinfecting and sterilizing. It cannot disinfect the places where the ultraviolet light cannot be irradiated. When using it, try increasing the height so it can reach more areas. It is helpful for rooms with large spaces, few dead ends, and weak ventilation.

You can decide whether to use ozone-emission lamps based on your situation. Remember to communicate carefully before buying an ozone product from the UV LED manufacturers!

3. Light Source

There are two main light source options used by UVC light companies. They are low-pressure mercury light and LED light.

Most of the lamps on the market are low-pressure mercury lights. There are very few LED light sources on the market. It is because LEDs are more expensive.

Besides, its sterilization effects are weaker than low-pressure mercury lights.

LEDs are commonly used for UV disinfection boxes for toothbrushes and innerwear. Make sure you choose the right UV light supplier before purchasing.

4.Tube Material

The choice of tubing mainly depends on whether it is a quartz glass tube. There are two main tube materials: quartz glass and high borax glass.

The ultraviolet transmittance of high boron glass is lower than that of quartz glass. Those with high-intensity and long-life ultraviolet lamps are usually made of quartz glass. The ultraviolet intensity it produces is about 1.5 times more than that of high boron lamps. Thus, most of the largest uv light manufacturers recommend a quartz glass tube.

5. Power Selection

38W is suitable for disinfection and sterilization of a room of about 30-40m². Larger ones, such as 60W, are suitable for a room of about 50-60m². Greater power creates stronger sterilization efficiency and effect for the same room size.

6. Starting Method

Use an infrared remote control or timing delay startup. It avoids direct startup and hurting the human body.

7. Small Portable and Home Placement

Small and portable is easy to carry, hence suits people who travel frequently. You can put it in the car or in your luggage.

Choose a legit manufacturer or a known brand, like a reliable UV lamp manufacturer. It is not recommended to choose products with an extremely low price. Their safety and disinfection effects can be worrying.

Determining The Quality of Germicidal Lamps

1.Standard Guidance

According to the guidance of disinfection and sterilization technical standards:

– Each microorganism has specific UV killing and death dose standards.

– The dose is calculated via the irradiation intensity and irradiation time:

K (Bactericidal Dose) = I (Irradiation Intensity) * t (Irradiation Time).

The effects of high-intensity short-time and low-intensity long-term irradiation are the same.

How many years has the average user used the lamp?
How much is the irradiation intensity?
Is it still bactericidal?

These questions are unanswerable as we can’t do any detection. For products that are intended to sterilize but have yet to be completely sterilized, it is a great risk to produce, sell, and use them regardless of their bacteria-carrying status.

2. Materials

Ultraviolet lamps are made of pure quartz glass tubes. Due to different costs and usage, high borax glass tubes are also used. But their characteristics and effects are quite different.

The pure quartz and the high borax glass tube have different effects and prices. Thus, different considerations should be made when using.

Pure quartz tubes have a UV transmittance of over 80%. In contrast, high borax glass tubes have a UV transmittance lower than 50%. So,  consider UV lamps made of quartz glass tubes when choosing a far UVC light manufacturer.

3. Penetration Ability

The penetration ability of ultraviolet rays is not as high as imagined. Any paper, lead glass, or plastic will significantly reduce the irradiation intensity. Besides, the dust and oil stains on the lamp tube will affect its penetration ability.

So, you should wipe the new lamp tube with gauze dampened with 75% alcohol. It is to remove oil stains, hand sweat, and dust. The lamp and quartz tubes should also be wiped and cleaned regularly. It avoids affecting the UV penetration rate and irradiation intensity.

4. Harm to the Human Body

Ultraviolet rays have strong killing power on bacteria. But it has inevitable damage to the human body too.

The most vulnerable part of the human body is the eye’s cornea. So, do not look directly at the lit lamp at any time to avoid injury. If you have to look at it, use ordinary glass (wear glasses). Or, you should wear a light-transmitting plastic sheet as a protective mask.

Refrain from using quartz glass. It is because regular glass is almost completely impermeable to ultraviolet rays.

5. Irradiation Intensity Inspection

The UV germicidal lamp suppliers should regularly inspect the irradiation intensity. Remember to replace the lamp from your germicidal lamp supplier if its irradiation intensity is insufficient.

Ultraviolet rays are invisible light. The purple-blue light in low-pressure discharge lamps is mercury vapor pressure. The intensity of mercury vapor pressure is indeed related to UV rays. But, it does not directly represent the intensity of UV rays.

So, the strength of UV light cannot be judged by the strength of purple-blue light in the visible light band. We should know that the naked eye cannot check the intensity of ultraviolet rays. There are other factors, like the light decay of quartz glass and UV transmittance.

Two Choices of UVC Lamp Light Sources

Currently, UV light manufacturers generally use low-pressure mercury and deep UV LEDs as the UVC lamp’s light source.

Low-Pressure Mercury Light Source

After being powered on, the mercury vapor in the lamp tube is broken down by the arc. Then, it is triggered to emit ultraviolet rays, mainly at 254 nm and 185 nm. The mercury spectrum also includes the visible wavelengths of blue and purple light. So, we tend to see blue-violet light with our naked eyes.

Generally, the tubes of sterilization lamps are made of quartz glass. The transmission rate of 254 nm ultraviolet rays is more than 90%. If the volume of titanium (Ti) elements in quartz tubes is adequately controlled, the escape of 185 nm ultraviolet rays can be reduced. There will also be no impact on the 254nm UV rays transmission.

With this feature, three kinds of ultraviolet sterilization lamps can be made:

– low ozone (non-ozone) lamps

– ozone lamps

– high ozone lamps

PS: Ordinary fluorescent lamps also use the same principle. But, their lamp tubes are made of ordinary glass, which UV rays cannot pass through. The colors of light we usually see are triggered by UV phosphor coated on the inner wall of the lamp tube.

Disadvantages of using mercury light sources:

① Most light emitted is visible and infrared. It is due to its high photoelectric conversion efficiency. So, the sterilization efficiency is low.

② It causes environmental pollution. The emission spectrum of mercury lamps has far ultraviolet light below 200 nm. Thus, it will produce a lot of ozone and a horrible smell after prolonged use.

③ Mercury lamps consume a lot of energy. The service life of mercury lamps is short, with only 800-1000 hours. Discarded lights cause secondary pollution.

Deep Ultraviolet LED Light Source

LED lamps have a central wavelength below 300 nm. Unlike mercury lamps, it uses light-emitting diodes as light sources. It cooperates with specific chips to emit UV rays of a particular wavelength.

One tested the sterilization effect of a single LED UV lamp. A wavelength of 265±5 nm and an output radiation flux of 5mW is used. The result shows the main factors affecting the sterilization effect are:

– The irradiation distance

– The irradiation intensity

– The time

UVC LED has more benefits than traditional light sources in sterilization.

①It can light up instantly and reach 100% power UV output immediately. It does not need preheating.

②The service life is super long. It lasts more than ten times that of the traditional UV mercury lamp curing machine.

③The power consumption is low. It only consumes 10% power of the traditional mercury lamp curing machine. Thus, it can save 90% of the power.

But, UVC-LED has a small size with a low radiation efficiency at a high price. Thus, it is currently only used for small-area sterilization.

Still, UVC-LED lamps made by most UV germicidal lamp suppliers have many advantages like

– heavy metals-free (e.g., mercury)

– energy-saving

– safe

– reliable

– flexible design.

So, it is widely used in various sterilization fields with small disinfection areas. For instance:

There are certain limitations of the actual usage scenario. For instance, direct ultraviolet radiation being blocked or insufficient irradiation time. As a result, the sterilization effect may be reduced. But, you can customize the services of LED UVC suppliers according to the usage. Air Sterilization

Indirect Irradiation:
A high-intensity ultraviolet sterilizer can be used under empty indoor conditions. It is highly effective and also can be used when there are people indoors.

Direct Irradiation:
The UV disinfection lamp can be directly irradiated by hanging or moving it in an empty indoor space. For indoor hanging UV disinfection, the number of lights installed should be at least 1.5W per m2.

For example, you can disinfect and purify areas below without mercury and chemicals. It is convenient as it only occupies a small space.

UV light companies suggest irradiation of over 30 minutes gives the best effect. It is applicable whether it is indirect or direct irradiation.

Water Treatment

Ultraviolet disinfection is a physical disinfection method. It does not add chemicals to water like chlorine disinfection. So, it does not have side effects on the human body when disinfecting drinking water. You can keep minerals that are good for you.

Experts suggest using 200-280nm wavelength in the UVC region for water treatment sterilization.
